Ballerina Bites: Miso-Mite & Avocado on Toast

We've all heard the old adage that 'breakfast is the most important meal of the day'. This is certainly true for dancers, who need lots of nutrient-rich, energy boosting foods to fuel them through their morning. Finding that perfect balance of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats in a breaky that also tastes yummy can be quite the challenge though... (nobody wants to eat the same old cereal day in and day out). Thankfully, Alexandra McMaster - aka. Ballerina Bites - has done all the work for us! This month Alex shares a super tasty twist on an old Australian favourite! See below for her delicious savoury breakfast recipe:

Miso-Mite & Avocado on Toast

Being Australian, I love vegemite!

However, this salty spread is not the healthiest, it’s loaded with preservatives and a hefty amount of salt. “Nooooo” I hear you say?! Don’t fear, I have an alternative: ‘Brown Miso Paste’.

Yes believe it or not brown rice miso paste has the same distinct salty taste that makes for the perfect substitute.  It also contains incredible nutritional benefits; it’s rich in minerals, B vitamins, vitamin E, folic acid, probiotic qualities for good gut heath and finally the salt in miso paste is absorbed differently (in the body) than compared to regular table salt.

For this month’s recipe I decided to share ‘Miso-Mite & Avocado Toast’. Yes, I’m sure you know how to make toast, but I mainly wanted to share this little foodie revelation that’s going to be so much better for your health!

Ingredients

2 slices of your favourite wholemeal or sourdough bread, toasted

1-2 tbsp brown rice miso paste (make sure you use brown rice miso as it has a richer savoury flavour than white)

½ ripe avocado, sliced

Optional extra toppings

Juice of ¼ of a lemon

A sprinkle red chilli flakes

Spread brown miso paste on each slice of toasted bread and top with avocado slices. If you’re wanting to make your toast even tastier, squeeze over lemon juice and a sprinkle of chilli flakes.

Enjoy!

With Love
