Australia's Must-See Ballet and Musical Theatre Productions in 2025
This year, the curtains open for all to witness new and legendary musicals and productions across several states. While some performers will reprise their roles, others will debut in these perennial favourites which feature award-winning songs and choreography of the likes of David McAllister, Thomas Meehan and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Annie | March-August
With her golden locks, red dress and the bustling streets of New York, the universally known story of young Annie returns to Australia this March! Having won seven Tony Awards Annie brings iconic songs ‘Its the Hard Knock Life’ and ‘Tomorrow’ to life whilst audiences follow protagonist Annie as she navigates her journey as an orphan in New York. Treat littlies this winter with the perfect birthday gift!
Beetlejuice | May-June
The adaptation of Tim Burton’s iconic film Beetlejuice featuring stars Winona Rider and Michael Keaton makes its Australian debut in 2025. Following the life of teenager Lydia Deetzes, the story reveals the series of events that unfold as Lydia feels an unwanted presence at her new home and is introduced to ghost Beetlejuice and the Maitlands. Come see the thrilling story featuring Helpmann Award winner Eddie Perfect in May.
Cats | June-December
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats is back! Renowned for being the eighth-longest-running West End show, this megamusical featuring elaborate costuming captures the lives of the Jellicle cats and the rebirthing at the Heaviside Layer. Dancers are sure to be captivated by the iconic choreography and ballad ‘Memory’ originally sung by Elaine Paige which continues to enthral all.
The Sleeping Beauty | JULY-DECEMBER
Step into the magical world of The Sleeping Beauty where audiences are swept away by the tale of ethereal Princess Aurora in Tchaikovsky’s longest ballet. David McAllister’s production includes costuming and wigs that exude nothing but opulence. With Principal Artists Sharni Spencer and Marcus Morelli, you wouldn’t want to miss this spectacular performance.
PRISm | September-November
The triple bill production, Prism, explores ‘Blake Works VI (The Barre Project)’, ‘Glass Pieces’ and ‘World Premiere’. With contemporary choreography by William Forsythe, ‘Blake Works VI’ pays tribute to ballet dancers during the COVID 19 pandemic. Juxtaposing this, Broadway choreographer Jerome Robbins’ reflects New York’s fast-paced lifestyle in ‘Glass Pieces’. Lastly, The Australian Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Stephanie Lake closes Prism with her latest piece of work.
