A Dancer's Life

Painting as they dance: Signapura

'Each and every movement of a dancer is filled with their complete expression of body, mind and feelings. Dancers are powerhouses who are able to touch the audience deeply with their creative energy. It is very hard to capture this flow of energy. It is saved in the mind of the dancers body but neither a single picture nor even twenty pictures/sec are able to show what is going on inside a dancer or between him and the audience. Even as an artist I am aware that even in the figurative interpretation of an artist there’s always a gap. When I was working as a photographer and following the moves of the dancers in the ballet hall, I recognized trails on the floor from many generations of dancers: The Lines the ballet dancers left behind were overlapping, crossing and striving apart. Lines that created an independent picture that included and showed the whole energy of the dancers. I wanted to capture these lines as the last track, the top layer of a dance performance. It was a two-year process from this idea to its realization. Finally I found the right method and the right medium for this'

~ This is how talented and innovative artist Luis Casanova Sorolla describes the motive behind his stunning works, that combine the two artforms of dance and painting into a fusion of artistic expression that capture the flow and 'energy' of each dancer in a way like no other. The Peruvian born Sorolla started his studies in classical painting when he was eight, moving to Vienna at the age of fifteen where he went on to study at the University of Fine Arts Vienna. He graduated with a Masters Degree before working as a solo artist locally and internationally, and now splits his time between his two homes and workspaces: London and Vienna. His current project, Signapura ('Visible diagrams of the self'), is a collaboration with dancers and musicians from the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Ballet London, the New York City Ballet and Music Conservatorium Vienna.
