Zoe Amara Wijemanne: A Journey Toward Ballet Stardom

Zoe Amara Wijemanne’s journey into the world of dance began at the age of three at the National Theatre Ballet School in St Kilda. Her early years were filled with a love of movement and exploration, as she tried her hand at various dance styles, including ballet, tap, jazz, and contemporary. Zoe’s active lifestyle also extended beyond dance, participating in competitive artistic gymnastics and cross-country running. However, it was at the age of nine that her passion for ballet deepened, setting her on a path toward a professional career.

From Aspiration to Dedication

Zoe’s dream of pursuing ballet professionally took shape during the challenges of the pandemic. Under the guidance of Kate Reilly, she strengthened her foundational technique and conditioning. At the age of 10, she began training under Claire Campbell-Mahon, whose classical Vaganova-based curriculum has provided Zoe with a highly specialised training environment. Under Miss Claire’s mentorship, Zoe has flourished, dedicating approximately 18 hours a week to classical ballet and contemporary dance while balancing high school life at St Michael’s Grammar School.

Zoe’s commitment goes beyond the studio. She has embraced opportunities to perform, participate in competitions, and attend summer schools around the world. From workshops to international intensives, she has absorbed a wealth of knowledge, refining her technique, artistry, and musicality—aided by her instrumental lessons in piano and violin.

Milestones and Achievements

At just 13, Zoe’s achievements are nothing short of remarkable. She has performed in productions with the State Youth Ballet Company and Brisbane City Youth Ballet, earning featured roles such as Edith in Alice in Wonderland and Lead Stars in Cinderella. Her competition accolades include:

  • Asian Grand Prix: Bronze (2022), Bronze (2023), and Gold (2024) across Sydney regionals, culminating in Silver at the international finals in Hong Kong (2023).

  • Australian Classical Grand Prix: Gold in 2023 for her performance of Kirov’s Peasant Pas.

  • Alana Haines Australasian International Competition: Top 11 finalist in Wellington (2023).

  • Australian Ballet School Scholarship Awards: Runner-Up (2023).

  • YAGP Sydney Regionals 2024: Third place in the Junior Women’s Classical division, earning an invitation to the prestigious YAGP International Finals in Tampa, Florida (2025).

Zoe has also been awarded training scholarships to some of the world’s most esteemed institutions, including the Australian Ballet School, Canada National Ballet School, John Cranko School, and San Francisco Ballet Academy, among others.

The Joy of Dance

Zoe’s love for dance is deeply rooted in her connection to classical music and the joy of movement. She recalls early memories of watching Storytime Ballet by The Australian Ballet and dancing along to Emma from The Wiggles. From these formative moments to performing as a seahorse in The Little Mermaid at just three years old, Zoe’s passion for dance has always been fueled by a desire to challenge herself and share emotion through her artistry.

Her journey has been shaped by incredible mentors, including her teacher Miss Claire, her family, and the performances she’s witnessed at The Australian Ballet. “Sometimes I feel like I grew up being an audience member,” she shares, fondly reflecting on the hours spent discussing productions with her mother and sister.

The Competitive Spirit

Zoe’s experiences in competitive ballet have taught her resilience and focus. Her mindset during competitions is grounded in joy and self-improvement. “I focus on my journey and my performance and try not to let any low moments define me.” For Zoe, competitions are not just about medals but opportunities to grow, learn, and connect with her artistry on a deeper level.

Marianela Núñez, principal artist of The Royal Ballet, is Zoe’s greatest inspiration. Her artistry and passion motivate Zoe to strive for her dream: becoming a professional ballerina who inspires audiences worldwide. Zoe hopes to one day represent a prestigious ballet company, performing on iconic stages such as the Royal Opera House or Palias Garnier.

Performance Rituals and Favourite Dancewear

Zoe’s pre-performance rituals are a mix of practical preparation and mental focus. From enjoying sweets backstage with friends to visualising her performance and reminding herself to just “do me,” Zoe ensures she enters the stage with confidence and joy. Her go-to dancewear?
